Child Nutrition Programs – What Are They and Why Are They Important?

Child nutrition is a critical part of addressing hunger. For a number of reasons, there are unique challenges and opportunities for addressing child hunger compared to other groups of people like older adults. For example, children are in a unique stage of development; they spend a large part of their days at school.

Anti-Hunger Fellowship Reflection with Izzy Bratton

Over the summer, I worked with Hunger Free Colorado and Young invincibles as an anti-hunger fellow. I learned the importance of food assistance in creating strong communities and how college students need help accessing and connecting with SNAP. (Which is relevant now, more than ever, in these strenuous circumstances.)

Food Insecurity – What is It?

Hunger Free Colorado works to end hunger. Of course, when we say hunger, we aren’t talking about that feeling of hunger you get before deciding if you want to cook at home or order out. We’re talking about hunger – often chronic hunger – that is caused by food insecurity. To understand our work, it might be helpful to first understand what food security is.

Meet Our Mobile Outreach Manager Ninfa Drago

In the Denver area, you might run into a woman sitting at a table near a sign that reads, “APPLY FOR FOOD STAMPS HERE.” If she isn’t with a client, she’s scanning the crowd. Some people she’ll let pass but others, she’ll call over. “I love interacting with people,” Ninfa said. “I love to provide them help and give them hope to have a better life by making them feel supported.”

Ninfa assists a client by connecting them to food resources.

Hunger Free Colorado’s Advocacy for Change (2021)

For many people, policy is a confusing, daunting void somewhere in the distance. It’s easier to not even touch policy sometimes. But imagine for a second, your school cafeteria. What food was offered? How much time did you get to eat lunch? Was there support for kids who couldn’t afford meals? Many of our experiences with food and more are shaped by policies, directly or indirectly. Things don’t simply happen, and we can raise our voice to decide what happens.
