Important News and Updates
WIC Funding Update!
We have kept you updated on the WIC funding situation as Congress negotiated an agreement to fund the government through fiscal year 2024. Due to increased demand as a result of program improvements, high food costs, and the end of pandemic era assistance, WIC funding needs were $1B higher than earlier projections.
On March 3rd, Congress proposed a funding package for fiscal year 2024, which included full funding for WIC. On March 8, this proposal was approved by Congress. We are grateful to Congress for fully funding WIC, ensuring that new parents, infants, and young children can continue to receive uninterrupted access to the vital nutrition resources they need to thrive. Thank you to everyone who participated in our recent action alerts urging Congress to fully fund WIC.
URGENT: Urge legislators to meet the funding needs of Healthy School Meals for All to keep kids fed!
Healthy School Meals for All (HSMA) is facing a funding shortfall for the 2024/2025 school year, and we need your help to urge legislators to bridge the funding gap. HSMA’s successful 2023 implementation demonstrated the program’s effectiveness in making it more affordable to raise kids in Colorado, reducing stigma, supporting student well-being, and bridging a gap for families who struggle to meet basic needs amidst the high cost of living in Colorado but do not qualify for free federal school meals.
Due to higher than anticipated participation rates and the rising cost of food, Healthy School Meals for All funding needs are higher than expected. Without significant additional funding, all of HSMA’s important program components are at risk. Go to bit.ly/fundHSMA to help us urge legislators to to support our students, parents, agricultural producers, and cafeteria workers by investing in HSMA!
Summer EBT passed in Colorado!
We are thrilled to share that the Colorado legislature recently passed Senate Bill 2 to create Summer EBT for Colorado children. Summer EBT is a new federal program that will serve as an additional support for low-income households. Families with children eligible for national free or reduced-price school meals will be eligible to receive $40/month per eligible child in Summer 2024. This program will bring an estimated $35 million in federal food assistance to more than 300,000 Colorado children this coming summer!
Check out the factsheet to learn more about Summer EBT and see all the great partner organizations that endorsed this policy!
